Marangu 6-Day Itinerary
Marangu: The Path of the Pioneers
THE HISTORIC CLASSIC
The Marangu route, often called the “Coca-Cola” route, is the oldest and most established path to the summit. It holds a unique charm as the only route offering the comfort of permanent A-frame wooden huts instead of tents. While it follows a more direct approach, our “Guru” version includes a mandatory extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. This strategic addition transforms a historically difficult ascent into a stable, comfortable, and successful journey to the Roof of Africa.
Book nowThe Day-by-Day Journey
- Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut: A gentle, shaded walk through the rainforest. Arrive at the Mandara A-frame huts and take a short stroll to the Maundi Crater for views into Kenya.
- Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut: Transition into the moorland zone. The landscape opens up to reveal the jagged Mawenzi peaks and the massive Kibo summit in the distance.
- Day 3: Acclimatization Day (Horombo Hut): The Guru Difference: We don’t rush. Spend an extra night here, hiking to the Zebra Rocks (4,020m) to prepare your body for the thin air ahead.
- Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut: Cross “The Saddle,” a high-altitude desert plateau between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. You are now entering the stark, beautiful Arctic zone.
- Day 5: SUMMIT DAY (Uhuru Peak) and Horombo Hut: A steep scree climb to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, followed by the trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Return to the safety and warmth of Horombo Hut.
- Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate: Retrace your steps down through the moorland and forest. Collect your gold certificates at the gate before returning to Arusha.
- Age Restrictions: Participants must be at least 10 years old unless stated otherwise.
- Waiver Form: All participants must sign a waiver before the hike begins.
